Polis- Fundamental political unit made up of a city in the surrounding countryside.
Monarchy- rule by a single person.
Aristocracy- rule by a small group of noble rich landowning families.
Oligarchy- Wealthy groups who seized power.
Tyrant- Powerful individual who seized power by appealing to the common people
During the 6th and 7th centuries aristocracy controlled Greece. Athenians formed a democracy. Sparta formed a military state.
