A message to Garcia was very popular in the time it was published, it sold over 40 million copies worldwide. It was translated into 37 different languages, It was written in March of 1899. The book had two movies based off of it in 1916 and 1936. The phrase "take a message to Garcia" meant to take initiative. The book was set in the Spanish American War.
